Daraga is first applicant for cityhood in 17th Congress

DARAGA, Albay, July 26, 2016 (Bicol Standard) -- "Daraga is the first first applicant for cityhood in the 17th Congress of the Philippines," Albay 2nd District Rep. Joey Salceda announced today.

Rep. Joey Salceda
The congressman, who earlier said that the cityhood of Daraga was among his top legislative priorities, said that he hopes the OCD can immediately endorse its passage.

He earlier pointed out that Daraga has outgrown its town status and is ready to become a city. He said that Daraga has already met the income requirement for conversion from town to city, as mandated in Republic Act 9009. For fiscal year 2016, the town has an Internal Revenue Allotment (IRA) of of Php195,002,236.

The first-class municipality is home to the Cagsawa Ruins and the 400-year-old Our Lady of the Gate Church. It is also the site of the forthcoming Bicol International Airport.
