Cam Norte teacher drowns in attempt to save student

DAET, Camarines Norte 11/30/16 (Bicol Standard)-- A teacher was pronounced dead when he was brought to the hospital after he drowned while trying to save a student at Sitio Calabegaho, Brgy. Osmeña, Jose Panganiban, Camarines Norte.

Gene Avellana Jr
The victim was identified as Gene Avellana Jr. y Alberto, of legal age, married, and a teacher at Gawad Kalinga High School, Brgy. Osmeña, Jose Panganiban, Cam Norte and a resident of Basud, Cam Norte.

The Camarines Norte police said Avellana was swimming with some students when one student Aaron Hitolle went to the deeper portion of the sea and eventually asked for help.

Avellana tried to save him but the two were swept by the strong current.

Bantay Dagat personnel tried to rescue the two, but as of this writing, had only been able to recover Avellana, who was rushed to Jose Panganiban Hospital.

Rescue operations to retrieve Hitolle are still underway as of this writing.

Meantime, Avellana's students and colleagues have taken to social media to express their grief over the accident the teacher met.
