Sandiganbayan suspends LRay Villafuerte for 90 days due to graft charge

MANILA, September 9, 2016 (Bicol Standard) -- The Sandiganbayan has suspended Camarines Sur 2nd District Rep. and former Gov. LRay Villafuerte for 90 days.

Left: LRay Villafuerte
Right: Carlo Batalla
"Wherefore, the prosecution’s motion to suspend the accused Pendente Lite is hereby granted, and accused Luis Raymund Villafuerte Jr. is hereby directed to cease and desist from further performing and/or exercising the functions, duties and privileges of his position as Congressman of the Second District of Camarines Sur, or any other position he may now or hereafter be holding effective immediately upon receipt hereof and continuing for a period of 90 days,” the decision reads.

This is in connection with the questionable purchase of P20-million worth of fuel from a single proprietor without the required public bidding in 2010.

The complainant in said case is Carlo Batalla of Citizens Crime Watch.

Batalla, in an interview with Bicol Standard, said that the decision is long overdue.

Meanwhile, The court ordered Speaker Pantaleon Alvarez to implement the suspension order.

The signatories in the order were Chairperson Associate Justice Rodolfo Ponferrada and members Associate Justices Oscar Herrera Jr. and Karl Miranda.

As of 3 p.m. today, the said suspension order was already referred to the House Rules Committee for appropriate action.

Villafuerte has not issued a statement as of press time.
