High-stakes gambling ring busted; 2 village chiefs nabbed


DARAGA, Albay, June 22, 2016 (Bicol Standard) — A well-known restaurant here has allegedly been a longtime meeting place of high stakes players of the card game poker.

On Tuesday night, eight persons were apprehended in an anti-illegal gambling operation at Maranaw Restobar/Josephine ihaw-ihaw and Food Service, at P-3, Barangay Sipi, this town.

Among those who were collared in the raid were two Punong Barangays, identified as Wilfredo Nayve y Nacion, 47 years old, of Brgy. Market Site, this town; and Nap Cardel y Abion, 53, of Binanuahan, Legazpi City.

Also arrested were Margie Barcelon y Guades, 51 years old, married, of Brgy. Sagpon; Elvie Mapagdalita y Manzano, 44 years old, of Brgy. Bagumbayan; Michael Millena y Aguilar, 39, married, of Brgy. Tagas, all from this town; Edgar Manzano, 18 years old, single, of Brgy. 16, Legazpi City; Vicky Galicia y Alejandro, 50 years old, married, of Brgy. 4, Sagpon, Legazpi City; and Noel Repolles y Soria, 39 years old, married, also of Brgy. Sagpon, Legazpi City.

The police confiscated from the aforementioned suspects a total of P271,942.75 in various denominations as well as other pieces of evidence.

As of the time of this posting, charges for the violation of Presidential Decree No. 1602, or the law against illegal gambling, are still being prepared against the suspects.
