A platoon of the 9th Infantry Battalion encountered at least five rebels at around 5:47 a.m. of Valentine's Day in Barangay Buri of Mandaon, Masbate.

9th IB Commander Lieutenant Colonel Patrick E. Cinco reported that the encounter lasted for five minutes and resulted in the recovery of one Colt M16 rifle and five improvised explosive devices. He further said that no soldier was hurt while the rebels scampered to different directions to evade the attacking soldiers.

903rd Infantry Brigade Commander Colonel Fernando R. Trinidad directed pursuit and blocking operations against the fleeing insurgents.

The strike operation was carried out to verify a call from a concerned resident in the community about the presence of five fully-armed men conducting extortion activities in the barangay which also coincided with the intelligence monitoring of the 9th Infantry Batallion.
