NAGA CITY—The celebrated cases filed against student activist Pio Emmanuel “Em” Mijares have been dismissed this morning by Municipal Court in Cities Branch III Judge Zenaida Bragais.

Last year, Mijares was charged with violation of Articles 148 and 153 of the Revised Penal Code, or tumults and other disturbances of public order, and assault upon an agent of a person in authority.

This was after he shouted calls for social change during the Araw ng Kalayaan speech of President Benigno Aquino III in Naga City

Criminal cases numbers 129834 and 129835 were dismissed because of the complainants’ failure to show up for three consecutive times during the hearing, which according to the decision, violated Mijares’ constitutional right to a speedy trial.

In an exclusive interview with BICOL STANDARD, Mijares said: “I am very happy at nakakagaan ng loob. Thankful sa maraming tao na hindi ako pinabayaan at patuloy na naguide through the proceedings. Patuloy ang advocacy for education and karapatan.”

A student of Ateneo de Naga University, Mijares is the current regional coordinator of the National Union of Students of the Philippines-Bicol.—BICOLSTANDARD.COM
