Cop gunned down at Sorsogon's Pili Festival

SORSOGON CITY—An officer of the Philippine National Police was shot dead while deployed for routine area security in connection with the Pili Festival.

In the report furnished to BICOL STANDARD, 37-year-old PO1 Rolly Dollentas Furio of the Community Police Assistance Center (CPAC 3) and companion PO3 Rhea Lasin Laganzo were shot at by two persons while the cops were on duty in front of Capitol Park, Rizal St., Barangay Burabod, this city.

The incident occurred at around 5:30 p.m. on June 28, a day before the Sorsogon City fiesta.

The suspects, who were around 15 to 20 years of age, were armed with short firearms, the same report indicated.

Furio was hit on different parts of his body.

Meanwhile, Laganzo, seeing the suspects, drew her sevice firearm despite her shock. However, she was unable to return fire as the suspects immediately fled on board a motorcycle.

The victims were rushed to the Sorsogon Doctors Hospital for medical treatment.

Furio, it was discovered, sustained four gunshot wounds and was declared dead after an hour.

In the ensuing investigation of the Sorsogon City Police and the Scene of the Crime Operatives (SOCO), four cartridge cases for a caliber .45 pistol were recovered.

Said pieces of evidence are now under the custody of the SOCO for ballistic examination.
