Authorities to have aerial survey on Bulusan Volcano

LEGAZPI CITY—Officials of the Philippine Institute of Volcanology, Office of Civil Defense-Bicol, Philippine Air Force-Tactical Operations Group 5 and the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office of Sorsogon will conduct anytime today an aerial survey of the Bulusan Volcano in Sorsogon province.

This, after the second phreatic explosion occurred at 9.46 p.m. Wednesday that spewed ashes up to 250 meters or 820 feet high.

The volcano's first explosion happened on May 1.

The emitted ashes fell on the volcano's southwest quadrant, particularly on the towns of Irosin and Juban.

Jessar B. Adornado, OCD-5 operations officer, said the survey team is now in Irosin, Sorsogon.

Also in the team are representatives of the Philippine National Police, 903rd Infantry Brigade of the Philippine Army, Department of Education and other concerned agencies of the government.

Adornado said the local government unit of Sorsogon is planning to evacuate residents affected by the recent activity of Bulusan Volcano, among them, the 112 residents of Barangay Cogon in Irosin.

He said the aerial survey will determine the volume of ashes emitted by the volcano, as it could bring complex disaster.

They would also determine the ash deposit in the volcano and the areas that would be immediately affected, especially with the threat of tropical depression "Dodong" to the Philippines.—by Nancy I. Mediavillo (PNA)
