Girl, 5, rescued from 3-hour hostage incident

PARACALE, Camarines Norte—A 5-year-old girl is slated to undergo counseling after she was held hostage by a bolo-wielding man in Purok 1 Matanlang, Brgy Tawi, here.

The suspect was identified by police as Larry Vasquez y Rodriguez, 34 years old, a gold panner, and a resident of P2 Brgy. Masalongsalong, Mercedes, Camarines Norte.

Vasquez held the girl at the point of the bladed weapon at 3 p.m. yesterday, May 5.

Upon receiving information, police swooped to the scene. A task team was immediately created. A team was deployed to conduct negotiations with the hostage taker. Other operatives were also tasked to monitor the entire situation.

The assistance of Myra Vasquez, the suspect's sister, was also sought by the police.

Finally, at 6 p.m., or three hours after the girl was restrained, police were able to divest the weapon from Vasquez and to seize the girl from his control.
The successful operation was conducted under the helm of PCInsp. Rommel Bachiller Labarro, Chief of Police here. 

Meanwhile, two sachets containing substance suspected to be shabu were found in his possession. The same were discovered after he underwent mandatory frisking prior to his detention. 

Criminal complaints for Serious Illegal Detention and Violation of Section 11 of Republic Act 9165 or the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002 are now being prepared for filing against the suspect.

Vasquez is now under the custody of this station.
