Mascariñas is new BU president

Dr. Arnulfo Mascariñas has been elected the new president of Bicol University today at the Commission on Higher Education Main Office at University of the Philippines Diliman in Quezon City.

Mascariñas bested the other three contenders, including Dr. Domingo E. Angeles, UPLB Dean of the College of Agriculture; Dr. Helen M. Llenaresas, BU Vice President for Academic Affairs; and Dr. Amelia A. Dorosan, BU Vice President for Administration.

Mascariñas got seven votes, while Angeles got 4, and Llenansares 1.

Prior to being chosen, Mascariñas served as Bicol University Research and Development Center Director.

He was also Dean of the BU Graduate School.

A consistent scholar, Dr. Noly received among others, the USAID-RRDP Scholarship in MS in Rural Sociology from the University of the Philippines Los Baños and the PhilRice Scholarship for his Ph.D. in Community Development from the same university.

He received the Highest Academic Excellence award and graduated cum laude in college. He was also awarded with the Most Outstanding Academic Performance in his doctoral study for having earned the highest point average of 1.12. Because of this, he was inducted to the Phi Kappa Phi International Society. He made valuable contributions to Bicol University as a proponent and writer of numerous proposals. He has been a community organization and community development Consultant.

He was a research assistant of the Bicol Consortium for Agriculture Resources Reseacrh (BCARR) and the Southeast Asian Regional Center for Graduate Studies and Research in Agriculture (SEARCA). He was the socioeconomic research unit head of the Farming Systems Research and Development Project (FSRDP), head of the Community Organizing, Training and Extension Unit of the Bicol Rainfed Agriculture Development Project (BRADP), and the agricultural technician of the Department of Agriculture. As a professional, he was awarded the Most Outstanding Socioeconomic Researcher in 1986.

He is married to the former Ms. Ma. Jane M. Bañaga. They have two children named Jythro and Enaj Marie.--With report from Mark Kevin Arroco
