Sorsogon declares itself a pro-life city

SORSOGON CITY—Sorsogon City has declared itself a pro-life city under Executive Order No. 3, Series of 2015 signed by Mayor Sally Lee.

Said Order was the subject of the Pro-Life Congress held here on January 27 to 29, where Lee underscored the need to protect life.

The residents of Sorsogon City, Lee said, should help each other in protecting everyone’s welfare, particularly those of pregnant women.

Children are among the treasures of every family, she stressed.

The local chief executive’s Order reads: “The State recognizes the sanctity of family life and shall protect and strengthen the family as a basic autonomous social institution. It shall equally protect the life of the mother and the life of the unborn from conception. The natural and primary right and duty of parents in the rearing of the youth for civic efficiency and the development of moral character shall receive the support of the Government.”

It adds, “The State shall defend the right of children to assistance, including proper care and nutrition, and special protection from all forms of neglect, abuse, cruelty, exploitation and other conditions prejudicial to their development;

Whereas under the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, everyone has the right to life, liberty and security of person. Motherhood and childhood are entitled to special care and assistance. All children, whether born in or out of wedlock, shall enjoy the same social protection;

Whereas under the Magna Carta for Women (RA 9710), the State shall, at all times, provide for comprehensive, culture-sensitive, and gender-responsive health services and programs covering all stages of a woman’s life cycle and which addresses the major causes of women’s mortality and morbidity. Provided, that in the provision for comprehensive health services, due respect shall be accorded to women’s religious conviction, the rights of the spouses to found a family in accordance with their religious convictions, and the demands of responsible parenthood, and the right of women to protection from hazardous drugs, devices, interventions, and substances.”

Regional Director of Human Life International-Asia/Oceania Dr. Ligaya A. Acosta was the guest of honor during the Pro-Life Congress. Acosta discussed natural family planning, contraception, and other issues in relation to family life and the protection of human life.—BICOLSTANDARD.COM
