OCD-5 places Bicol under red alert

The Office of Civil Defense-Regional Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council has raised its red alert status on typhoon “Ruby” effective Wednesday afternoon, according to OCD Regional Director Raffy Alejandro.

Alejandro said all members of the council are 100-percent focused on the coming typhoon.

With the red alert status, he said, all RDRRMC members are are ready to respond to emergencies with the expected impact of Ruby.

The OCD regional chief said he convened on Wednesday afternoon all the response units under the RDRRMC like the Armed Forces of the Philippines, Philippine National Police, Bureau of Fire Protection, Philippine Coast Guard, Department of Health, Department of Social Welfare and Development and Department of Public Works and Highways to check on their readiness in terms of manpower and equipment resources.

He advised them to be ready with their respective contingency plans.

Alejandro said they are also prepared to evacuate residents who are living in high risk areas.

He said that based on his meeting with weather officials in Bicol. Ruby will bring strong winds and rains, storm surges, flash floods, erosions and lahar flows, particularly in river channels of the Mayon Volcano.

Based on the the models that the RDRRMC is monitoring, Ruby is expected to hit the region on Saturday, Alejandro said.

He added that 44 provinces will be on the typhoon’s path. (PNA)
