Sorsogon prepares for Bulusan volcano hazards

Although an alert warning has not been hoisted over Sorsogon’s Bulusan Volcano, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) is conducting a 3-day seminar to discuss how the province can prepare in the event that the volcano shows increased levels of activity.

Called “Pag-Andam para sa Bulusan Volcano” (Preparing for Bulusan Volcano), the seminar is scheduled to be held today until October 2. Day 1 will be spent at Villa Celeste Resort in Dancalan, this town; Day 2 at Lilia’s Garden, Irosin; and Day 3 at Cayetano Hall at the Juban Municipal Compound.

Among those present at the seminar are PHIVOLCS Director Renato U. Solidum, Jr., Provincial Administrator Robert Lee Rodrigueza, and Chief SRS, Volcano Monitoring and Eruption Prediction Division Martion Bornas.

It will be recalled that earlier this year, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) said that Alert Level 0 prevailed as of July 13.
However, an increasing activity in the volcano was recorded.

At that time, the seismic network recorded several volcanic earthquakes, while the precise levelling survey showed that the volcano was slightly inflated.

As precautionary measures, the local government units and the public were reminded that entry to the 4-kilometer radius Permanent Danger Zone (PDZ) is strictly prohibited due to the possibility of sudden and hazardous steam-driven or phreatic eruptions.

Civil aviation authorities were also directed to advise pilots to avoid flying close to the volcano’s summit as ejecta from sudden eruptions may be hazardous to aircrafts.

Lastly, people living within valleys and along river/stream channels were instructed to be vigilant against sediment-laden stream flows and lahars in the event of heavy and prolonged rainfall.—BICOLSTANDARD.COM
