Millions of pilgrims to flock to Naga for Peñafrancia fiesta
Said event has earned the city the title of the Pilgrimage Capital of the Philippines, which President Benigno Aquino III proclaimed into law in 2010.
The devotion itself, however, is centuries-old, beginning with Miguel Robles de Covarrubias.
Covarrubias was the son of a Spanish government official who lived in the 1700s.
He became the first diocesan priest to be ordained in this city. Believing that Our Lady of Peñafrancia helped him recover from a serious illness, he urged locals to construct a chapel and carve an image of her.
Our Lady of Peñafrancia was canonically crowned as Patroness of Bicolandia on September 20, 1924.
Apart from the Traslacion and the fluvial procession, the activities this year include the Miss Bicolandia beauty pageant, Regatta sa Salog, Short Film Festival Awards Night, and the Bishop Gainza Trade Fair.--BICOLSTANDARD.COM
