Mayon's threat of eruption remains

LEGAZPI CITY--There is still the threat of a big eruption, Ed Laguerta, resident volcanologist of the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) announced earlier today.

Laguerta was addressing speculations that the volcano would no longer erupt as expected because the number of earthquakes and rockfalls are reportedly decreasing.

He clarified that the volcano's crater could merely be clogged, due to the growing continuously-increasing lava dome.

Two volcanic earthquakes and 14 rockfall events were recorded recently by Phivolcs' seismic instrument.

Laguerta reminded the public to avoid going to the danger zone and extended danger zone that have been identified around the volcano because of the continuing threat.--With report from PNA/BICOLSTANDARD.COM
