Earlier today, a composite team of the BFP, City Environment and Natural Resources Office (CENRO) and Sorsogon City Emergency Response Team (SCERT) went to Sitio Tiagao, Barangay Osiao area to assess the damage after receiving a report that fire had broken out.

With the assistance of a barangay kagawad, and four barangay tanods from Osiao proper, the team noted that hectares of tiger grass (talahib), cassava (kamoteng-kahoy), young coconut tree (tagbong) and other root crops were damaged by the fire.

They also noticed thick smoke coming from Sitio Magasang and Sitio Gajo and assumed that a bush fire also happened in said areas, the report said.

Later, they were alerted by PNP Bacon that a bushfire was also raging at Sitio Gayong in Barangay Barangay Santo Niño.

The police officers were worried that the blaze would affect Gayong Elementary School in the same barangay.

However, the fire was unable to reach the school because the distance from the fire to the building made heat transfer through conduction or direct contact almost impossible.

The composite team in their investigation discovered from the residents of the barangay that the bushfire started on August 2 and has not stopped since.

Some 20 hectares of tiger grass (talahib) were burned, the BFP claimed.

Tiger grass is one of the main sources of livelihood of the residents, who earn a living by making fans out of the leaves.

As the team was on its way home, they saw that the smoke coming from Sitio Grajo had turned into large flames. According to the team, they assumed that it was another bushfire in progress.

In their report, they revealed that the cause of the fire is still under investigation. However, they suspect that its cause is the practice of kaingin.

It will be recalled that several towns in Albay have been affected by bushfires this week, as well. (With report from BFP Sorsogon City Chief Marcial)  BICOLSTANDARD.COM
