DA extends post-Glenda rehabilitation aid to Bicol

SORSOGON CITY—Agriculture Secretary Proceso J. Alcala visited the Department of Agriculture (DA)-operated Sorsogon Dairy Farm in Barangay Cabid-an yesterday to lead the launch of the Bicol Rehabilitation Assistance for Glenda (Agriculture Sector).

During said activity, Alcala and DA Bicol OIC Regional Executive Director Abelardo R. Bragas distributed over P5-million pesos’ worth of farm input and equipment to the farmers and fisherfolk affected by the recent typhoon. Among these were corn and pili seeds and seedlings, carabaos with ploys and harrows, sheep, laminated sacks, garden tools, marine engines, fishing gears, and non-motorized fiber glass bancas.

Sorsogon is among the three provinces in Bicol which were hit the hardest by typhoon Glenda. It has been estimated that the total value of agricultural damage reached P318.72M.

Bragas also noted that the DA will make available farm equipment such as 4WD tractors, harvesters, flatbed dryers and hand tractors for rent at a minimal cost.

In attendance at the launch were acting governor Antonio H. Escudero, Rep. Evelina G. Escudero, Rep. Deogracias B. Ramos, Ako Bikol partylist representative and Bicol Recovery Program chairperson Rodel Batocabe, local chief executives, barangay officials, farmers and fisherfolk, officers and members of the agriculture and fishery councils, the heads of DA-attached agencies, and members of the local media. – with report from Emily B.
