Caceres Archbishop Emeritus Legaspi passes away

NAGA CITY — Caceres Archbishop Emeritus Leonardo Z. Legaspi, OP, DD, has passed away at 5:00 this morning at the University of Sto. Tomas Hospital in Manila, the Archdiocese of Caceres announced.

Legaspi, who was 78 years old, succumbed to lung cancer.

Born in Meycauayan, Bulacan on November 25, 1935, he was educated at St. Mary's Academy in Meycauayan, the University of Hong Kong, the University of Santo Tomas, and the Harvard Graduate School of Business Administration.

He served as President of the Catholic Bishop's Conference of the Philippines, Rector Magnificus of the Pontifical and Royal University of Santo Tomas, Titular Bishop of Elefantaria in Mauritania and Auxiliary Bishop of Manila.

On January 18, 1984, he was installed as the 3rd Archbishop of Caceres.

His term ended on September 8, 2012. He was succeeded by Most Rev. Rolando Joven Tria Tirona, O.C.D.

Legaspi's body will be brought to Naga City for a mass, per the request of Archbishop Tirona,
