NAGA CITY—Despite the tight security, a student activist was able to steal the limelight from President Benigno Aquino III, the guest of honor at the Independence Day celebration here.

While His Excellency was delivering his message, Pio Emmanuel Mijares, a 19-year-old BS Psychology student of Ateneo de Naga University, shouted at the top of his lungs: “Patalsikin ang Pork Barrel King! Walang pagbabago sa Pilipinas!”

UPDATE: Ateneo activist Mijares faces 2 criminal charges, prepares to post bail

Mijares, an alleged member of Youth Act Now and Kabataan, was around 40 meters from where Aquino was standing.

The President was momentarily stunned by the loud noise, as everyone turned to look at Mijares. Aquino, however, still continued with his speech.

Karapatan Bikol spokesperson Vince Casilihan said in an immediate reaction, “Binitbit at sinaktan si Mijares ng mga PSG.” (Mijares was grabbed and hurt by the Presidential Security Group (PSG)).

He was taken to the Naga City PNP Office for questioning.

PNP Naga spokesman SPO1 Toby Bongon confirmed to BICOL STANDARD confirmed that Mijares will be charged with violation of Article 153 of the Revised Penal Code. This provision pertains to tumults and other disturbance of public orders. The imposable penalty is arresto mayor in its medium period to prision correccional in its minimum period and a fine not exceeding 1,000 pesos.

Meanwhile, a militant group held a separate rally in front of Jesse M. Robredo Coliseum along Ninoy and Cory Aquino Avenue.

The protesters carried screaming placards with the words “Aquino patalsikin.”

They were barred from entering the Central Business District I by members of the PSG and the local PNP.—BICOLSTANDARD.COM
