Salceda vs. Gonzalez political showdown looms anew

For the second time, incumbent Albay governor Joey Salceda and incumbent Third District Rep. Fernando Gonzalez may face off in a much-awaited political rematch in the province of Albay.

Salceda vs. Gonzalez political showdown looms anew
Salceda, who was former representative of the third district, declared earlier tonight that once again he is throwing his hat in the ring in the Congressional fight.

Minutes after his announcement, Gonzalez also confirmed his own bid for re-election.

At present, Gonzalez is on his second term as representative.

Salceda and Gonzalez, it will be recalled, had slugged it out for the gubernatorial post in 2007. Salceda won against Gonzalez.

During Salceda's second and third re-election bids, he ran unopposed.

Meanwhile, Gonzalez, who was a three-term city mayor of Ligao before being elected as governor in 2004, won as the representative of the third district in 2010.

Political observers believe that the Salceda-Gonzalez political battle will be a hotly-contested clash, since the general perception is that Salceda is not vulnerable, being elected twice as governor with no opponent.

Gonzalez, on the other hand, being the incumbent congressman, has developed a stronger grip on the district's political arena, apart from gaining popularity in Ligao City, where his wife presently serves as mayor.

As these developments unfold, supporters of both camps are expressing words of encouragement to rally their future candidate.

Salceda earlier clarified that he made the early announcement so that the efforts of those who have started campaigning will not be wasted. On social media, supporters have been clamoring for him to run for a higher position in the country.
