According to the resolution, the city government will lead the celebration of said occasion on June 30 every year.

June 30 marks the date of the Siege of Baler, a military operation of Filipino forces against the final holdout of Spanish troops in the Philippines who were garrisoned in the church of Baler, now the capital of the province of Aurora. President Emilio Aguinaldo granted the survivors safe passage to Manila, en route to their return to Spain, as a tribute to the loyalty and gallantry they had displayed.

Said incident would later form the basis for the promulgation of Philippine-Spanish Friendship Day, by virtue of Republic Act. No. 9187, s. 2002.

Since the promulgation of Republic Act No. 9187, the celebration of Philippine-Spanish friendship day has been held in various towns and cities across the Philippines, including Baler, Malolos, Iloilo City, Vigan, Bacolod, Zamboanga City, and Manila. Several cities and towns in Spain like Madrid, Barcelona, Palencia and Almonte have also observed Philippine-Spanish Friendship Day.—BICOLSTANDARD.COM
