NAGA CITY—Drivers and operators of passenger jeepneys here are expected to join on Monday, March 24, a protest caravan asking the government for a P6.00 discount on diesel products for all public utility vehicles.

The protest, which is led by the transport group Pagkakaisa ng mga Samahan ng Tsuper at Operators Nationwide (PISTON), announced that apart from their members here, the transport groups from Sorsogon City, Albay, Camarines Norte, Manila, Baguio, Tuguegarao City, Laguna, Cebu, Iloilo, Bacolod, Dumaguete, General Santos City, Davao, and Cagayan de Oro will join the protest.

The same group also demands for the repeal of the motor vehicle plate standardization project due for implementation this month.

The organizers of the protest caravan said that their group in Manila will proceed to Malacañang where they plan to give a letter explaining their demands to President Benigno Aquino III.

It will be recalled that other transport groups led by ACTO, FEJODAP, PASANG-MASDA, and LTOP filed a petition for a fare hike in December 2013.

These groups last February also filed a motion for a provisional fare increase of P0.50 to the current P8.00 fee for the first four kilometers.

The Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) is scheduled to resolve the motion this week. Pending the approval by the agency, the petitioners are prohibited from increasing fares.BICOLSTANDARD.COM
