NAGA CITYA former police officer from this city was arrested for violation of Republic Act 9165 or the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002 the other day.

Noel Balla, Jr., who was allegedly purged from the roster of Philippine National Police (PNP) officers due to other infractions of the law, was cuffed together with Anthony Talagtag, 31 years old, Harold Talan, 32 years old; Oscar Coloma, 32 years old, of Zone 2 Calauag, Naga City; Walter Morata, 32 years old, of Tamban, Tinambac; Jose Perez, 46 years old, of Zone 6, San Roque, Camaligan; and Gregorio Savilla, 44 years old, Zone 6, Tamban, Tinambac.

When they were arrested, the group had been in front of Cooling Store, where they had been playing the card game Monte. Said game is prohibited under Presidential Decree No. 1602, or the law prescribing stiffer penalties on illegal gambling.

The authorities explained that while the group was not actually holding a drug session, the store where they were playing was subject of a search warrant issued by Executive Judge Pablo Formaran III of the Regional Trial Court, as the same place was reportedly being used as a drug den.

The raid yielded items that are commonly used in drug sessions. Among these are eight lighters, one tooter, one weighing scale, one pair of scissors, one roll of aluminum foil, and several pieces of crumpled aluminum foil.

As part of the standard operating procedures, the group will be subjected to a confirmatory drug test by the PNP. (With Report from Oscar Esmenda)
