Naga City joins attempt to break most number of organ donor registrants world record

NAGA CITYThe attempt to break the Guinness world record on most people to sign up for organ donations has begun.

At the Jesse M. Robredo Coliseum in this city, long queues of those who want to register have been forming since 9 AM. Marshalls have already been deployed in the area to assist the donors.

Last wednesday, Bicol Medical Center (BMC) Department of Surgery and Organ Procurement Office head Dr. Freddie Sy announced in a press conference that donors can give their cornea, eyes, liver, pancreas, bones, kidneys and lungs when they have passed away.

This, according to Sy, will be an invaluable help to victims of organ failure.

Sy clarified, however, that while the project aims to break the world record, its focus is more on spreading awareness about the advocacy.

Organ donation, says Sy, is a way for ordinary citizens to become heroes, as their body parts will help extend the lives of other people.

BMC chief of Medical and Professional Staff Dr. Mary Jane Jane Guazon-Uy, echoed Sy's call, saying that the project will also help the Department of Health (DOH) achieve its goal of having no live organ donors in the future.

Naga City, however, is but one of the six locations in the country which together aim to be break the Guinness record. Currently, the the organ donor sign-up is being held in Quezon City Circle in Quezon City, Polytechnic University of the Philippines Track and Field Area in Sta. Mesa, Manila, Ilocos Training and Regional Medical Center in San Fernando City, La Union, Almendra's Gym in Davao City, Davao del Sur, and Leonardo Mamba Gym in Tuguegarao City.

The Philippines will try to beat the record that is being held by India, which had 10,450 registrants in eight hours, and 2,755 in one hour. (With report from Oscar Esmenda)
