Around 20 business establishments of this sparkling "City of Fun and Adventure" received certificates of appreciation and trophies from Mayor Noel E. Rosal recently for being part of the 100% smoke-free venues and establishments in Legazpi City.

The awardees were Casablanca Suites, Hotel Casablanca, La Piazza Hotel, AVP Restaurant and Catering Services, Legazpi Airport Hotel, Boklan Restaurant, Tyche Hotel and Boutique, Golden Dragon Restaurant, Alicia Hotel, Small Talk Restaurant, Kanzo Hotel and Restaurant, Hotel St. Ellis, Waway’s Restaurant, Hotel Venezia, Villa Angelina Hotel, La Rocka Reranda Suites, Four Seasons Restaurant, Innodata Knowledge Services, Inc., Community Police Assistance Center 1 (CPAC 1) and Oriental Hotel.

Rosal disclosed that the smoke-free program of the city started with the implementation of Ordinance No. 0007-2009 or the revised smoke-free law authored by Councilor Rolly Rosal, enacted by the members of the Sangguniang Panlunsod and approved by former mayor Carmen Geraldine B. Rosal in 2009.

The city chief executive said the implementation of this ordinance was a shared responsibility of the Legazpi City Health Office (CHO) as the leading implementing office together with non-government organizations, religious organizations, schools, business establishments, academe and smoke-free ordinance law enforcers.

For three consecutive years from 2010 until 2013, the city government of Legazpi was awarded by the Department of Health as a model LGU in the entire country in recognition of its effective anti-cigarette smoking campaign.

It has been placed at the DOH's Hall of Famer in the prestigious Smoke Free Red Orchid Award during the annual Worldwide celebration of World No Tobacco Day on May 29, 2013 at the Philippine Trade and Training Center in Pasay City, Rosal added.

To sustain the implementation of the program, he vowed to put up more big billboards and video screens at the airport, seaport, markets, terminals and other public places and crowded areas of the city as part of the smoke-free campaign to inform the public about the ill effects of smoking and the penalties on smokers.

This also aims to maintain the image of Legazpi as one-smoke free environment city in the country.

He said that this coming August, the DOH smoke-free inspection team will come to Legazpi to evaluate the implementation of its smoke-free program.

Rose Olarte Orbita of ADD+VANTAGE community team services and secretary of Smoke-Free Albay Network (SFAN) revealed that this non-monetary award is a meaningful token of recognition to all the awardee-establishments who had complied with the smoke-free policy by banning smoking inside their premises.

Orbita commended all the owners of the establishments who received the awards and the members of the smoke-free ordinance enforcers for their full support in implementing the smoke-free program of the city.

He urged them to put a designated smoking areas at their own business places.

Based on the data recorded by the city smoke-free unit, around 737 violating smokers were arrested in 2012 while 788 violators in 2013, most of them were visitors and local tourists coming from neighboring municipalities and provinces of the region. (PNA) LAP/FGS/EPS/CBD/
