NAGA CITY  In a novel way to win the hearts of the public in the midst of rising criminality, the Philippine National Police (PNP) Provincial Office in Camarines Sur handed out red roses to people in celebration of Valentine's Day.

The activity, called "Pulang Rosas Handog sa iyo ng Pulis," is the brainchild of OIC Provincial Director Police Senior Supt. Ramiro Bausa. It was supported by all members of the local police.

Members of the PNP gave the roses to motorists and commuters passing along the Provincial Office in Concepcion Grande in this city.

Policemen gave roses to female travellers, while policewomen gave roses to males.

Many were taken aback by the gesture because they initially believed that the PNP was conducting intensified checkpoint operations.

Having realized, however, that approaching police officers were smiling and holding red roses, the would-be recipients of the Valentine's gift felt surges of relief.

In an interview by BICOL STANDARD, the receivers of the red roses sang praises for PNP's unique style to boost its image as protectors and friends of the public.
