By virtue of Presidential Proclamation 599 signed by former President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo in February 2004, the month of February each year was declared as the National Dental Health Month Celebration.

2014 marks the tenth year that the nation commemorates Dental Health Month.  This year’s theme is “Ngiping pinagtibay, ngiping walang humpay, para sa kinabukasa’y maginhawang tunay.”

The Philippine Dental Association (PDA) led by its President Dr. Fernando Fernandez chose five key cities in the nation for its kick-off ceremonies: Camarines Sur in South Luzon, La Union in North Luzon, Bacolod in the Visayas, Davao in Mindanao, and the National Capital Region.

As the President of the Host Chapter, Camarines Sur is indeed fortunate that the national leadership of the PDA has entrusted the hosting of the National Dental Health Month (NDHM) 2014 on  on February 6 to Camarines Sur.

The Camarines Sur Dental Chapter, which is recognized as the Most Outstanding Dental Chapter in the Bicol Region in 2013, will be joined by representatives from the other provinces of the Bicol Region, namely Albay, Camarines Norte, Catanduanes, Masbate and Sorsogon, during the kick-off ceremonies on February 6.

Among the scheduled NDHM 2014 activities on said date are a holy mass in honor of St. Apolonia, the patron saint of dentists, at the Naga Metropolitan Cathedral. There will also be a motorcade along the major streets of the Central Business District of Naga. This will end at SM City Naga where the NDHM program and contests will be held. Such contests include the on-the-spot poster-making contest and the Search for Kiddie Star and Bonggang Lolo and Lola. In addition, a free dental checkup that aims to create awareness on the importance of racticing Good Oral Hygiene.

On February 7, pupils of the Triangulo Elementary School in Naga City will be the beneficiaries of the  Kabarangay sa Dental Health Program, where a dental checkup, oral health education, toothbrushing drill, fluoridization and distribution of toothbrushes and toothpastes will be conducted.

The PDA, which is recognized by the Professional Regulation Commission as the Most Outstanding Organized Professional Organization for 2011 and 2012, has given utmost importance to intensifying professionalism through its continuing dental education program.

Proof of this commitment is the PDA- Systema Regional Conference  where three very competent speakers  will present  lectures on dental diseases, issues and the latest technologies. This conference which will be held as well on February 7 at the Villa Caceres Hotel in Naga City.

To promote the Oral Heath Awareness and Consciousness Campaign among the general populace, I, as Chapter President, will be exposing myself to various television and radio Interviews to bring to the attention of the public these two basic but very important messages: brush your teeth at least thrice a day and visit your dentists for a checkup every six months.

I hope that the public will cooperate with me on this call to improve the oral health of Bicolanos, not only during the Dental Health Month, but also throughout the year.

Dr. Albeus is the Philippine Dental Association (PDA) President in Camarines Sur. He has been serving for two terms since January 2012. Albeus is a graduate of the University of the East- College of Dentistry in Manila.
