The regional secondary schools press conference will commence today at Marcial Q. Rañola Memorial School in Guinobatan, Albay.

The event, which gathers students from across Bicol in a series of journalism-related competitions, will take place until Friday, January 31.

The participants of the event are the top four winners of the division-level schools press conferences.

With this year’s theme of “Campus Journalism and Transformational Leadership,” the conference aims to demonstrate the importance of journalism, sustain advocacy on social consciousness and provide a venue for an enriching learning experience, among others. It seeks to promote responsible journalism and enhance competence through a healthy and friendly competition.

There are eight individual contests and three group contests. The individual contests are on editorial writing, news writing, sports writing, feature writing, photojournalism, copyreading and headline writing, and science and health writing. Meanwhile, the group contests are on scriptwriting and broadcasting, collaborative publishing, and a school paper  competition. Likewise, there is a search for outstanding school paper advisers and campus journalists. Most of the contests are categorized into two media, English and Filipino.

Schools press conferences are conducted every year, pursuant to Republic Act 7079, or the Campus Journalism Act of 1991.
