NPA rebels harass Army detachment in Masbate, wounds militiaman

CAMP GEN. SIMEON A. OLA, Legazpi City (PNA) -- A member of the Civilian Active Auxiliary (CAA) force was wounded when New People's Army (NPA) members fired at their detachment in Barangay M. R. Espinosa, Milagros, Masbate, at about 4:30 a.m. on Sunday.

A police report received by Chief Supt. Victor P. Deona, Police Regional Office 5 regional director, said CAA Francisco Zaragosa, assigned at the military post in the area, was rushed to the Masbate Provincial Hospital in Masbate City.

The report said Zaqragosa was among those manning the detachment when an undetermined number of rebels fired at the unit, immediately wounding him, prompting them to return shots.

A 10-minute firefight ensued, after which the communist dissidents withdrew and fled towards an unknown direction.

Army soldiers immediately came for reinforcement and launched a hot pursuit operation against the fleeing rebels. (PNA) CTB/FGS/EMC/CBD/RSM
