Motorboat sinks off Masbate; Coast Guard rescues 12

The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) rescued all the 12 passengers, including the pilot, of a motorized boat that sank in the waters off Barangay Don Pablo Dela Rosa, Aroroy, Masbate, on Tuesday afternoon.

Raffy Alejandro, Office of Civil Defense Bicol regional director, identified the rescued persons as boat pilot Rodolfo Natal and passengers Rosa Mae Ramirez, 16; Rowena Ramirez, 45; Apolinario Ramirez, 19; Aiza Ramirez, 21; Grace Ramirez, 17; Remelio Paraiso, 17; Aris Pajo, 18; Alexander Bolisig, 2; Vicente Bolisig, Jr. , 10 months old; Joelan Ramirez, 23; and Marion Espenilla, 18.

All victims are residents of Barangay Osmeña, Claveria, Masbate, who were on their way to Barangay Poblacion, Aroroy town, to attend the wedding of a relative.

Alejandro said the M/B Janet being piloted by Natal was hit by big waves at about 1 p.m., causing water to pour into the vessel that eventually sank.

Natal called the attention of the Coast Guard whose men immediately came to the rescue of the victims.

The authorities brought the survivors to a hospital for treatment of injuries and pulled the boat to the shore.

They learned that the boat is being used for fishing by Natal and that it was overloaded when the accident happened. (PNA) FFC/FGS/EMC/CBD
