The provincial government of Camarines Norte is preparing to celebrate the 151st birthday of hero Jose Maria Panganiban on February 1.

Tasked with spearheading the activity is the Museum, Archives and Shrine Curation Division of the provincial government.

Among the activities that are slated on said date is the commemoration of the life of the hero right in the town of Jose Panganiban (formerly Mambulao), where Panganiban was born.

Last week, the hero was honored in a series of events in Naga City, where the propagandista studied.

Panganiban was born on February 1, 1863, in Bangal Phase II in Mambulao, Camarine Norte. He received his education at the El Seminario del Santissimo Rosario, or the current Holy Rosary Minor Seminary in Naga City.

A gifted writer, Panganiban lashed against the abuses of the Spanish government in articles that were published in the newspaper La Solidaridad. To protect his identity, he wrote the works under the pen name Jomapa or J.M.P.

He died of illness in Barcelona, Spain on August 1, 1890.

In 1931, his hometown of Mambulao was renamed after him via Act No. 4155.

In Naga City, an important avenue was likewise named Panganiban Drive after the hero.

At least three monuments of Panganiban have been erected in Bicol: one at the lobby of the Camarines Norte Provincial Capitol, another in Jose Panganiban, Camarines Norte, and one in Naga Central School I in Naga City.
