Archbishop Rolando Tria Tirona of the Archdiocese of Caceres in Camarines Sur was one of the Catholic bishops who paid Pampanga representative and former President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo a visit at the Veterans Memorial Medical Center in Quezon City earlier this week.

Tirona was joined by Archbishop Neri Ochdimar of Tandag, Bishop Emilio Marquez of Quezon, and Archbishop Diosdado Talamayan and Bishop Ramon Villena of Nueva Vizcaya.

Atty. Raul Lambino, Mrs. Arroyo’s spokesman, revealed to the media that the bishops during the homily discussed compassion and love for someone who is persecuted.

Arroyo, for the past few weeks, has been visited by several high-profile personalities in the Philippines, including former President and current Manila Mayor Joseph Estrada, former Vice President Noli de Castro, former President Fidel V. Ramos, Jesus is Lord Movement (JIL) leader Bro. Eddie Villanueva, anti-crime advocate Lauro Vizconde, and former first lady Imelda Marcos.
Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) president Socrates Villegas, in a statement regarding the bishops’ visit, said that the move shows that “a priest would bring God’s blessings to anyone, whether he or she is a former president, a homeless person, a prisoner or someone ill.”
